Some people ask, what does the name “Sarasota” mean? Many believe the name is derived from the Spanish term “Place of Dancing”. We like this! Other folks say the Spanish settlers in the early 1700s called it “Zara Zota” which translates to “Sahara by the Blue Waters”. There’s no denying it – the immense beauty of the white crystalline beaches and enticing turquoise blue waters can be breathtaking. This truly is paradise.
Another story mentions a young woman named Sara, who was the daughter of the famous explorer and conquistador Hernando de Soto. However, this legend is now considered a myth. Nevertheless, the Sara de Soto Pageant was observed and celebrated from 1916 to 1948. This annual eight-day event included extravagant downtown parades, outdoor food festivals, beauty pageants, fireworks, circus performers, elephants and more.
