The Three Wildest Skin Care Myths

Let’s face it – achieving picture-perfect healthy skin is a challenge. Especially if you’re new to skincare and don’t know much about it. You might think to ask Google or Siri for some tips and tricks, and of course, everything you read online is true! Just kidding. There is a ton of false information on the internet, and we are here to help you avoid these 3 common skin care myths.

Myth #1: Oily Skin Does Not Need Hydration

Most people assume adding moisture to already oily skin will lead to acne or a super shiny effect. This is false. With no moisture at all, the skin becomes dehydrated and begins to over-compensate by producing more oil. The key to a perfect balance of moisture is finding a product that keeps you hydrated without adding extra oil. For example, if you have an oily skin type, look for a moisturizer that is water-based and non-comedogenic (won’t clog your pores). This will ensure you’re skin is hydrated and your regular oil production is under control.

#2 The Higher the SPF the Better It Works

Mathematically this statement is true, but the amount of protection you’ll receive from SPF 100 versus SPF 30 is only a 3% difference. You are still getting 97 -100% UV protection no matter how high the SPF amount is. It’s important to use at least an SPF 15 with the words “broad spectrum” on the packaging. Broad Spectrum means it has ingredients that can protect you from UVA as well as UVB rays which both cause damage to the skin. No matter what the amount of SPF your favorite sunscreen has, it still gives about 100% protection and that’s what’s most important.

#3 Picking at Blemishes Helps Them Go Away Faster

Depending on the type of breakout you’re experiencing it’s usually best to leave it alone and let the body heal itself. I know it’s tempting to squeeze and push on an infected area, but if the breakout isn’t ready you could potentially push the bacteria deeper into the follicle which will cause scarring, pitting and redness. If you’re looking for a quick way to diminish the appearance of a breakout, try using a hydrocolloid pimple patch, tea tree oil or even toothpaste overnight.
