The History of Massage Therapy

At Colibri Day Spa & Beauty Shop, we have studied the origins of massage therapy, how it has evolved, and we want to share this with you!

History of Massage Therapy

Take a close look at this ancient Egyptian painting – dated around 2400 BC. You can see the two men having a massage done on their hands and feet. Egyptians have been credited for the creation of reflexology (stimulation of pressure points of the hands and feet) as shown in this painting.

For over 4000 years, the Chinese have practiced massage in many forms to cure ailments and improve their general health. This was the start of modern acupressure and acupuncture. These healing techniques rapidly spread into Japan and became known as ‘tsubo’ or modern Shiatsu.

At about the same time, massage also started in India – but for more personal hygiene routines rather than medical treatment. The sacred book Ayur Veda (the Art of Life), describes how rubbing was used on the scalp to help reduce fatigue and promote well-being.

At around 500 BC, massage therapy moved into Greece and Rome. These people believed in nurturing of a healthy mind and body, similar to the holistic approach of many therapies today. In Rome, before going into battle, Gladiators and Soldiers were massaged to give them more strength, endurance and to aid their recovery.

Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, would use massage when treating his patients. He realized the benefits of applying pressure in an upward direction towards the heart. Today, we know that massaging in an upward direction speeds up blood circulation and increases lymphatic flow, helping to eliminate the body’s waste products more efficiently.

In modern times, doctors and therapists recognize the importance of massage. Around the world, massage therapy is successfully used to treat many diseases and disorders. Advanced studies in human anatomy and physiology have helped to improve the many techniques being used today.
